Utah Juniper Advertisements

In Ms. Schmidt's class the students created advertisements to show why the Utah Juniper should be our state tree. Some persuasive points were that the Utah Juniper is more common in Utah compared to the Blue Spruce, the berries from the trees were used for medicine, jewlery, and food. Here are some of the students examples...

Jump For The Juniper Shirts

We have created a Jump For The Juniper T-shirt. The shirts are blue. They are high quality preshrunk. The original graphics are illustrated in four colors. The tree is green, the turnk is a grayish brown, and the scenic rocks are a rust color. The shapes are outlined in black. There is a black silhouette of a tree and arched rock with a list of our WONDERFUL sponsors for the Jump For The Juniper project.

A photo of the shirt will be posted the first part of January. If your interested in purchasing one of the shrits, you can email us at jumpforthejuniper@yahoo.com and we can give you more information and/or take your order. We would love for fourth graders around the state to wear these shirts and create awareness for others to join with us!

Inspirational Students Dreaming Big!

Our fourth grade students at Summit Elementary in Smithfield Utah are the cream of the crop! In fourth grade we teach all about Utah History. One of our veteran teachers, Don Sheffer, brought it to our attention that the matter of the state tree has bothered him for awhile now and he wanted this year to be the year we did something about it! While teaching the state symbols in my class the students got a little riled up about the Utah State Tree being the Colorado Blue Spruce. I guided their inquiry as they did a lot of research and came up with the tree they thought our state tree should be. They came up with some really great facts and presented a GREAT case to me that convinced me I should support their decision to push for the Utah Juniper to be our new state tree! They wrote a movie script and filmed a movie with the intent of showing it to other fourth grade classrooms in the state to get them to join with us and help us make a great change in Utah.

The other fourth grade classrooms at Summit have jumped right on board and have been contributing a lot to the whole effort to move this project along. Mr. Sheffer's class did research and added a lot of neat ideas to our already great movie! Mr. Benson and Mr. Rigby have been involved in the political part of the process. Mrs. Harris' class came up with the logo and the other three classes are contributing wherever needed. We have an excellent team of 8 teachers and 200 of the BEST 4th grade students out there!

We'll keep you posted on how the project is moving along. We welcome your comments and if you'd like to contact us directly you can email us at jumpforthejuniper@yahoo.com, thanks for visiting!
